Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?
An intense exfoliation of the skin.

Is Microdermabrasion helpful in acne and oily skin patients?
Microdermabrasion will reduce oiliness and reduce the appearance of large pores. This technique will clean out clogged pores and open comedones. It is not recommended that Microdermabrasion be used concomitantly with Renova or Retin A, due to skin sensitivity.

Is Microdermabrasion helpful in sun-damage and pigmented skin?
Yes. Sun-damaged skin will see gradual improvement in texture and lightening of superficial pigments.

Microdermabrasion
One treatment will improve your skin's smoothness; however, a series of treatments will maximize the effect.

How often should the treatments be done?
They can be scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the indications and skin sensitivity.

Is Microdermabrasion painful?
No.

Can it be combined with chemical peels?
Yes. This is commonly done, and the two procedures together have a complimentary effect.

Are there any patients who should not use Microdermabrasion?
Yes. Patients with Rosacea or dilated capillaries (telangiectasia) should be cautious using Microdermabrasion. Patients with sunburn should delay treatment.

What preparations should be done prior to Microdermabrasion?
Stop all skin care products, Retin A, and Renova several days prior to treatment. Read the information sheet and sign the consent form.

What about special care after the treatment?
Advanced home care products should be used to enhance and maintain your office treatment results.

What should I do after Microdermabrasion?
Use sunscreens and avoid direct sunlight. Also, avoid Retin A and Renova for three to four days. You may use makeup after treatment.

What will my skin look like after a treatment?
The skin will have a warm, healthy glow. You may have a slight pinkness, but the pinkness will diminish over the next 24 hours.

Chemical Peels

How much discomfort should be expected when having a peel?
The level of discomfort experienced depends on the treatment. Most chemical peels are gentle and create little or no burning or stinging sensation in the skin. Dramatic wrinkling, sun damage or acne scars may require a deeper peel, which may cause moderate stinging for a few minutes. More dramatic results can be expected from a deeper peel, however deep peels are not necessary for most skin types and conditions. Light to medium peels create minimal discomfort and produce beautiful and immediate results for most patients.

What skin type or condition will benefit most from the Pumpkin Peel and what results are expected?
The Pumpkin Peel Treatment is best for dull, rough skin and/or acne. It provides nutrient input and will brighten the skin. It is also great on very sun damaged skin that has lumps or bumps.

May people who are frequently in the sun receive peels?
Yes, but only if they are compliant with using sunscreen protection every day. Sunbathing should be avoided directly following a treatment.

May pregnant or lactating women receive a peel?
There hasn't been any studies done. Contact your OB/GYN for a personal recommendation.

Is it OK for someone using Retin-A, Differin, Accutane or Tazorac to have chemical peels?
It is recommended that the use of these medications be stopped 10 days prior to a peel and 5 days post treatment because of potential irritation and uneven peel penetration. However, patients should always consult their physician before discontinuing use of any prescription. The patient's skin care specialist should always be made aware of any prescription medication use. Remember, good communication with your skin care professional is vital.
